Pregnancy Hydration Support: How Much Water Do You Actually Need?

Pregnancy hydration support goes beyond "drink more water" - your hydration needs change as your body and baby grow.
One of the most common pieces of advice given during pregnancy is simply: drink more water.
While hydration during pregnancy is incredibly important, most women are being given generic recommendations that don't account for the reality that their bodies are constantly changing.
One of the things I often discuss when providing pregnancy hydration support is that hydration isn't a fixed number. It isn't something you set at the beginning of pregnancy and never revisit.
Your hydration needs grow alongside your pregnancy.
A simple formula I often use with clients adjusts fluid needs according to both body weight and stage of pregnancy:
First trimester: 30mL per kg of body weight per day
Second trimester: 40mL per kg per day
Third trimester: 50mL per kg per day
For example, a woman weighing 65kg would roughly require:
First trimester: ~2L daily
Second trimester: ~2.6L daily
Third trimester: ~3.25L daily
These numbers may increase further during hot weather, exercise, illness, or if you're experiencing vomiting.
One of the reasons hydration needs increase through pregnancy is because blood volume expands significantly as pregnancy progresses.
Your body is creating more fluid to support your growing baby, placenta, and the changing demands placed on your body.
But there is another piece that often gets overlooked: minerals.
Many women focus entirely on drinking more water, but hydration is not simply about volume alone. Electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and magnesium help your body maintain fluid balance and support how water moves within your cells.
This is why I encourage women to think beyond simply carrying a larger water bottle.
Hydration in pregnancy isn't set and forget. It changes with you.
This is also why personalised support matters. Every pregnancy, body, climate, and lifestyle is different.
