Holistic Motherhood - Why I Don't Chase Perfection as a Clinical Herbalist

Holistic motherhood isn't about doing everything perfectly - it's about making thoughtful choices that work for your real life.
If you spend any amount of time in the natural health space, it can start to feel like there are rules for everything.
Only organic food. Only clean products. No processed foods. No compromises. No exceptions.
Sometimes it can quietly create the feeling that if you're not doing all of it, you're somehow not doing enough.
As a clinical herbalist, people often assume I must have a perfectly low-tox home, make every product from scratch, and never make compromises.
The truth is much less interesting.
And much more human.
Here are three things I do that might surprise people.
We brush our kids' teeth with fluoride toothpaste once a week
I don't claim to know everything about everything, and risking my kids' teeth isn't on my parenting to-do list.
I've seen too many "healthy" children with significant dental decay to completely dismiss the potential benefits of fluoride.
For our family, this feels like a middle ground that sits comfortably with our values. My kids don't drink tap water and we decline fluoride treatments at the dentist, so brushing once a week with fluoride toothpaste feels like a choice that works for us.
Not because I think every family should do exactly the same thing.
Just because it's where we landed.
I don't buy clean makeup brands
I wear makeup a handful of times each year.
Spending large amounts of money on premium low-tox products only for them to dry out before I use them again simply doesn't make sense for me.
Sometimes wellness can make us feel like every single purchase has to be optimised.
But I don't think every decision needs to carry the same weight.
I focus more attention on the things that happen every day than the things I do a few times a year.
Sometimes we eat Maccas on road trips
Sometimes we stop for picnics.
Sometimes we find a little cafe.
And sometimes we pull into Maccas.
Hot chippies, clean bathrooms, a play centre, and a happy meal toy that buys another hour in the car can honestly feel like a gift when you're travelling with children.
It's not a big thing in our house.
My kids don't constantly ask for it.
It's just one choice on one day.
Realistic wellness matters
One of the biggest things holistic motherhood has taught me is that health doesn't exist in isolation.
Mental wellbeing matters.
Family connection matters.
Reducing stress matters.
Enjoying your life matters.
Chasing perfection in this space is exhausting, and pretending I'm perfect online isn't who I am.
If someone online looks like they never compromise, look a little closer.
I'd rather choose consistency over perfection.
I'd rather be thoughtful than rigid.
And I'd rather be human. If this resonates and you're thinking about support, start by booking your free 10 minute chat here x
