Natural Remedies for Pregnancy Swelling (Puffy Feet, Ankles and Hands)

Puffy ankles by the end of the day are one of those pregnancy symptoms nobody quite prepares you for. If you’re after natural remedies for pregnancy swelling, there’s a lot you can do, plus a few signs worth knowing that mean it’s time to call your provider rather than reach for a tea.

Why Swelling Increases in Pregnancy

Your body retains more fluid during pregnancy to support increased blood volume, and your growing uterus puts pressure on the veins returning blood from your legs. Both combine to make swelling in the feet, ankles, and hands more noticeable, especially by evening or in warm weather.

Natural Ways to Ease Swelling

Stay well hydrated. It sounds counterintuitive, but drinking more water actually helps your body hold onto less of it. Your fluid needs climb across pregnancy too, closer to 40ml per kilogram of body weight in the second trimester and 50ml per kilogram in the third, so what felt like plenty of water earlier on may genuinely not be enough now.

Don’t fear salt, focus on the right kind. It’s tempting to think swelling means “cut the salt,” but sodium is actually one of the key minerals your body needs to properly expand and manage its blood volume in pregnancy. The issue is usually the source, heavily processed, packaged foods, rather than salt itself. A well-formulated electrolyte with sodium as the dominant mineral (rather than one loaded with chloride) alongside potassium and magnesium-rich foods like leafy greens, bananas, and nuts tends to help more than blanket salt restriction.

Elevate your legs and sleep on your left side. Both improve blood flow back to your heart and reduce pooling in your lower legs.

Move regularly. Walking and gentle stretching support circulation far better than sitting or standing still for long periods.

Compression socks. These provide gentle, external support to veins that are working harder than usual.

When Swelling Is a Red Flag

Sudden or severe swelling, especially in your face or hands, or swelling that comes with a headache, vision changes, or upper abdominal pain, can be a sign of preeclampsia. This needs immediate medical attention, please call your midwife or obstetrician straight away rather than trying a natural remedy first.
