Natural Remedies for Pregnancy Headaches (And When They’re a Warning Sign)

A headache in pregnancy can mean almost nothing, or it can be an important signal, which is exactly why it’s worth knowing both the natural remedies for pregnancy headaches and the warning signs that mean you need to call your provider.

Why Headaches Are More Common in Pregnancy

Hormonal shifts, changes in blood volume and blood pressure, dehydration, and disrupted sleep can all contribute to headaches, particularly in the first trimester and again in the third.

Natural Remedies to Try First

Hydration first, properly calculated. Dehydration is one of the most common and easily fixed headache triggers in pregnancy, and most women simply aren’t drinking enough for how much their needs have grown. A useful rule of thumb is around 30ml per kilogram of body weight in the first trimester, rising to 40ml in the second and 50ml in the third, so a target that felt generous a few months ago may quietly be falling short now.

Magnesium. Magnesium glycinate or citrate, taken at a moderate daily dose, is well regarded for tension headache support and considered safe in pregnancy, though it’s worth checking the right dose for you.

Ginger. Taken at the first sign of a headache, ginger’s anti-inflammatory properties may take the edge off.

Steady blood sugar. Regular, smaller meals with protein help prevent the blood-sugar dips that

can trigger headaches.

Rest and reduced screen time. Simple, but often the most effective option when a headache is building.

When a Headache Needs Immediate Attention

A sudden, severe headache, particularly one that comes with vision changes, swelling, or pain under your ribs, can be a sign of preeclampsia. This is not the time for natural remedies; call your midwife or obstetrician straight away.
